I'm due to give a conference presentation in a couple of days at the Third Asian Conference on Psychology and the Behavioral Sciences (March 28 - 31, 2013, Osaka). I've just noticed in the conference program there is a note saying that, by attending I allow them to video record and use the recording in any way they wish. I've not noticed such waivers before at conferences. Is it normal these days?
I'm not sure whether it's normal, but "in any way they wish" is a bit broad for a copyright license. If I were in your shoes, I'd like something a bit more narrow, but you may not be in any position to negotiate.
I'd say that is a unusually sweeping. Normally, I've been asked whether I allow them to record me as a presenter. Also, I've been asked whether I'm happy for recordings of audience questions are OK when I've been in the audience. Like Andrew Connors above, I'd ask them whether you can negotiate something more narrow that you're comfortable with
Follow @Clifford Miller's advice. Japanese civil law follows European (mostly - German) model so formalities may apply in case of some licenses. Moreover, depending on facts of your case, consumer protection laws may apply.
I agree with @andrew connors. Any way they wish means any time, with the right to edit, through any means. Usually, it wouldn´t be valid, considering its an unilateral imposition and its extent. If I were you I would send an email confirming your presence and excepting the use of your image and content or explaining the limits (non commercial use, etc) Hope Ive helped.
