This is my first time working with the synthesis of methacrylated chitosan. I observed a lower viscosity compared to non-methacrylated chitosan hydrogels at the same concentration. I would like to know if this behavior is commonly observed.
Methacrylated chitosan exhibits lower viscosity than non-modied chitosan due to disruption of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding and reduction in the number of free amino groups involved in chain interactions. This reduces the number of free amine groups, decreasing hydrogen bonding and weakening chain-to-chain interactions, as well as steric hindrance.
