In my opinion, yes. For in making such a publication, it demonstrates interest and demarcates the limits of future research. With this, it establishes the property on the subject to be studied, as well as, where possible, the population / sample. In a way, I understand how to guarantee the authorship of the study.
If you work within a net of other researchers, known to you in your nearer surroundings (institute, university, etc.) OR by e-mail contacts etc. (that means: also remote colleagues), than it is not a mistake to let read your version BY one or two before to use RG "preprint". Obviously, it can be useful to use the preprint service of RG, but you don't expect marvels from the results to do so.
2 Even you get an endorsement or confirmation about acceptance by other RG users it is no measure or standard that your text is really okay. Because many people have many reasons for their judgements, and pure (unprofessional) encouraging is also possible. In the same way, you must not be disappointed to get too little reactions; that means, you must remain realistic and self-critical in your work.
3 If your text is prepared with additional material then you must know: If you have uploaded text and additional "data" you have no chance to exchange a data-file in the RG-file-type "preprint"; you have to delete both text-file and data-file und must begin anew.
4 In my experience - but other colleagues could have made other experiences - the binding to a high ranked journal is a limitation for preprints everywhere. Because you have to confirm that your contribution is not published in any kind elsewhere. But if you have a paper without high ambitions, only curious what other academic people think about this text - the preprint-type of RG-publishing could be interesting.
5 You have also the occasion in RG to use the categories "working paper", "poster", "conference paper", "presentation" etc. if you intend to visit a conference (independent of factual participation). Good luck,
Supplemental idea: The following practice seems to me optimally for your problem. Look for other scientists and threads in RG which you meet by reading their contributions and comments. If they are near to your topic use the RG-tool "follow". As a follower you can send he or she a message with your request, to ask for reading an personal judgement, your text you can ad to the message.
If you plan to publish your research, you need to find out if preprints are considered prior publication, in which case the journal may not publish your work. I would check with editors of the journals you are interested in publishing what their policies are. Sometimes they can be found in the author guidelines but this is not always the case. When you do submit your paper, you may need to tell the editor that there was a pre print.
A preprint is a useful way of publicizing your project and prepares the ground foe receiving productive feedback. It unravels procedural problems that have escaped the researcher's attention.
Consider a preprint something like a conference presentation, which requires improvement for publication in a journal. Please note that articles will not get impact factors, but journals only. You may also note that only those journals which were included in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of Clarivate Analytics(earlier, Thomson Rauters) would be considered for impact factors.
