Patients and helthy people without ICD doesn't seem to be coping with impulses not to gamble. I mean most of the people never feel an urge to gamble so they are not really controling impulse, they just don't have this need. Do you think those addictions are related with impulsivity?. Has anyone studied impulsivity in those patients?
Results from previous studies have been discordant. There is some debate on whether icd should be considred an impulsive or a compulsive spectrum disorder. In our own data (still unpublished) we did not find significant differences in Barrett impulsinevesse scale between PD patients with and without icd.
There have been a number of studies on the role of orexin/hypocretin regarding impulsive behavior, particularly gambling. It has been shown that narcoleptics have higher impulsivity, linking that impulsivity to diminished or absent orexinergic signaling. If I remember correctly PD patients also have low orexin levels, partly due to the normal loss of orexin neurons with aging.
