Can you explain what a "heuristic method" means within math teaching? I do not think I have heard the term used before in this context.

Dear Sudev,

The method you mention is somewhat similar to the one Moore used to teaching topology courses, which now is termed as Moore's method in the mathematics community. In this method, students are not required to know things of topological nature and only definitions and few examples will be provided to them by the instructor and they have to prove theorems in class using the given definitions and other founding axioms.

It is merely an intellectual exercise of expectations to  construct/obtain known and established truths of topology from the beginning, results that took hundreds of years if not more to be developed by several mathematicians.

From the outset, one problem stands out, the inability of the process to cover enough material from a pre designed course, which will later be a drawback for students, because of lack of not knowing enough information and knowledge from the course.

But such such works are the right fit to laboratory works in subjects of sciences such as biology, chemistry and physics, side by side with the theoretical studies offered by professors, in which students figure out by themselves why indeed a theoretical result is some how empirically true to be applied to reality. 

Discovery learning is the best method of teaching metacognition ,needed in mathematics.I think at that level ,it should be encouraged .WHAT THE STUDENTS LEARN BY THEMSELVES STICKS MORE IN THEIR MEMORY

Heuristic method of learning of mathematics or physics will be helpful sometimes. Students may enjoy joy of learning. 

In my own view, the method will help all the students to be active, up and doing, and be eager to learn instead of "spoon feeding" them at that level.

Heuristic method helps the students to develop better connection with the foundation of the concepts and if they are able to explore the subject by themselves, that is the best way to remember it for future applications. So, ideally I find it very useful for college students, though practically difficult to use it in regular course.

It is the best way to teach almost any subject! Although students don't learn much from lectures, learn only how to follow certain instructions from the standard cook book laboratories, they learn from what they do and discover as they try to solve problems.

It most interesting to hear the thoughts of mathematicians!

Of course dear @Markovic, heurisctic method is applicable to many scientific fields. But, the question of dear @Sudev is related to mathematics.

Yes, you are right regarding my last answer dear @Markovic. Speaking about heuristics as an effective method for teaching mathematics, not only algebra, please, have a look in my answer dated April 17th, 2015.

As a teaching method its very good, especially for future researchers.
