My reaction mixture consists of performic acid, formic acid and a phenolic compound. To make a kinetic reaction I take some samples from rxn mixture and dilute it with Ethanol. I see the catechol formation, but not the quinone in GC-MS analysis. The rxn mixture is red so there should be some quinones. But why cant i see its presence in these conditions?

I understand your question. But why have you not considered to measure the progression of the reaction by spectrophotometer? Since you have a coloured reaction product, that would have been the most simple way to proceed. Kind regards, Harrie Verhoeven.
Which source are you using? Column and injection technique?
The two can intercovert each other via hard ionization (eg EI), fragment in a similar way and they can elute together with "aggressive" thermal ramp.
The analyte you are looking at has a clear infrared finger print, you can achieve a preliminary confirmation via FTIR. Eventually, via LC/UV you can isolate the two and run them separately on the GC/MS
Two questions:
- are they volatile or do they decompose in the injector?
- did you stabilize them? Quinones are usually not particularly stable, so odds are they will have evolved to something else. You should add a scavenging chemical first. (though this will not improve the GC issue).
