Predatoryreports website recently listed Frontiers as a predatory publisher and decided to add Frontiers Media Journal to the list of predatory publications. Is this really the mainstream view within the academic community? Are academic authorities not approving articles published on Frontiers? Although the site currently lists only two frontiers journals in The List (Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine; Frontiers in Medical Case Reports), this seems alarming.

All Frontiers journals are published under a Creative Commons Attribution License. In 2015, Frontiers Media was classified as a possible predatory publisher by Jeffrey Beall. Based on a series of information published here, we decided to include the Frontiers Media journals on the predatory publications list.
Just had the same question. While some journal statuses are clear, Frontier seems Borderline. What could be an onjective criteria? Publisher? Their license?
The Swiss National Science Foundation (Swiss equivalent to the American NIH) actually lists Frontiers as an approved journal for publishing nationally funded studies and will pay the publication fees. This is validating of the journal collection. Are Frontiers publication fees similarly covered by other funding agencies?
Good point Daniel. It is covered by my Institution for sure. I'll check for the funding agency.
During my PhD, I had one work published in Frontiers in Psychology. The peer-review process was very serious. Once the paper got accepted for publication, I could see who the responsible editor was and who the reviewers were. Again, serious people in the field. My concern is that serious people have been engaged with and published in these journals, and including them as predatory does not seem very fair to me.
I was involved in a publication that was sent for submission in a journal I was not familiar with. After a day or two, the paper got accepted for publication, without a peer-review process. That signaled to me the predatory nature of that journal. We withdrew our submission and the paper was submitted elsewhere.
These experiences are very different. Of course, this is n=1 (my personal experience), but I'd love to hear other folks' experience with peer review in Frontiers journals.
