COVID-19 pandemic shut down many Universities and businesses around the world. Millions of peoples lost their job. Some companies asked their employees to work from home, and universities offer online teaching, a new experience for many. How all of these going to play out with the future of education?
I believe so. This may already be the case for low-income countries where universities mainly functioned from fees paid by students.
With good leadership and effective teamwork, Universities should be functioning as usual except that we need to get away with traditional classroom teaching during the COVID 19 pandemic. If the University already had been offering accredited and quality programs then sustainability should not be an issue. It is just a matter of time before moving to normal . The current or aspiring students will understand this and look forward to joining the University if it worth doing so.

It will and has. Universities have already been in financial trouble (see below) and will pare faculty, reduce expenses, either directly or indirectly (keeping the current price but heavily discounting it behind the scenes with additional scholarships etc.) will reduce tuition and at the same time cut their competitive and ancillary revenue advantage. There is an online migration feeding frenzy by universities that disenfranchises alumni and reputation making particular university attractiveness diminished once again fueling the price war.

It all depends on how fast they can find a vaccine. If there is a second waves as many predicted it will be, COVID-19 will not leave us so soon and the effect of it will be with us for a long time. Those millions who lost their jobs cannot easily afford expensive university education especially if it is offered through Zoom! It is going to be hard time ahead, especially for private universities and colleges.
I think will be an increase of online students from different countries.

I believe this pandemic will teach us in the area of education the importance of communication and engagement. Modern technology has created many ways of connecting with people from all over the world. Educators would have never thought of using such tools as Zoom or Google hangout if not for the pandemic. We, in general as educators and students, should always look for ways to connect, learn and inspire. Major universities that have taken the lead in online education such as SNHU, Arizona State and Liberty University, to name a few, should take the lead and explore all the alternative ways of connecting and expand their efforts to make alternative platforms of connection more mainstream.

agreed 100%. COVID-19 does not recognize any border. lets hope we can also remove all borders that are build around us such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender and every other things that separate peoples from one another.
I think the universities may have lower enrollments because students will take a year off until things resume under the "new normal". Unfortunately, I do not see education being less expensive but more to make up for the funds lost during the pandemic! There is still resistance regarding online especially when it comes to assessments (exams).
I am finishing up my first week of an online summer school class and have found those who have taken online classes have had little to no interaction with their classmates vs. their engagement in the face to face classes. So the traditional learning modes are still the preference!

The covid-19 pandemic lockdown restrictions definitely affects universities negatively. Poor institutions will become poorer and the richer institutions will become poorer since they will redirect budgets to shield themselves for example purchasing data and laptops for students. The quality of education will be very compromised since for example contact classes will be replaced by online ones which is very challenging especially to non-distance education and poor institutions. Due to lack of resources, some universities may end up offering unmonitored online exams, students ending up grouping together and write these online exams. This compromises quality in assessment.
La Covid-19 no es la causa de la actual crisis de la salud, la educación, el empleo es simplemente un catalizador. Aceleró un proceso que venia ocurriendo de manera gradual. Lo que verdaderamente genera la actual crisis es la ya existente crisis global expresada en deterioro ambiental, degradación cultural, pobreza, marginalidad, brechas cada dia mas profundas de disimiles desigualdades socioeconómicas.

Increasing Fees by the universities under current conditions (economic, social, method of delivery ) is a very sure way of putting themselves out of business.
Online education should be cheaper, that is why many parents are asking for refund!
Universities may loose their international students. However, if this is a global problem, many universities will arrange for distance education and online or blended degrees. Also, some countries are in better shape and may open their borders gradually while others might not be able. Countries may become selective in selecting international students.

International students make up 5.5 percent of the total U.S. higher education population and contributed $44.7 billion to the U.S. economy in 2018". There will be low enrollment among the local students due to economic issues as well. Universities can not offer online lectures and ask for the Face to face tuition fees! Therefore, they need to think carefully about how to adapt to the new normal. They have to strike a balance between the changes that they have to introduce due to COVID-19 and the price that their customers (students) have to pay.

Las universidades al igual que la mayoría de las empresas debe hacer ajustes importantes en su modelo de negocio, con el ánimo de no fracasar en el intento. No se trata de acabar con algunos programas académicos ni de bajar los precios de los programas actuales y aunque en Colombia la gran mayoría de las universidades implementó algún tipo de descuento para garantizar que sus estudiantes se matriculen, frente a ésta situación lo que se debe hacer es flexibilizar los planes de estudios, para permitir que estudiantes de diferentes programas puedan tomar cursos electivos de los demás programas académicos con lo que se garantiza que la mayoría de los espacios académicos logren el número requerido para su apertura. así garantiza la permanencia de los docentes. Esta medida puede ayudar a motivar a la planta docente y así ésto ofrecen una educación de calidad con lo cual se puede llegar a motivar también a los estudiantes.

Well the idea and concept of open universities seem to fit well in this coronavirus situation. In fact, traditional universities should be more open to the concept of e-learning and Ministry of Higher Education can plan on e-exam monitoring standard and the change of curriculum to make it more e-collaborated as what is needed in today's work from home norm.
