Having converted their Landsat Images from uncalibrated DN data to radiance, some authors have gone ahead to the second step of converting to radiant temperature in (degrees kelvin) while others did atmospheric correction of their data before the second step of converting to radiant temperature. I will like to know which step is more accurate (in case the 2 steps are) In fact, can you tell the steps that will yield the most accurate result?

Also, are the procedures (steps and formulas) the same for TM and ETM+ scenes and what bands are the best thermal bands to be used for temperature retrieval from ETM+ images.

I want to do these calculations manually (using ArcGIS 10.0) and would appreciate relevant references with manual calculations if possible.
