I have 3 soil samples taken at different depths (the first 2 samples were taken at 7 meters and the 3rd sample point at 9 meters) and the three points are about 90 meters apart. I need to create a surface ( interpolate) these 3 points using ArcGIS although other possible means will be appreciated. I will appreciate any comments on how this can be achieved taking into consideration that the 3 sample points are from different depths and are separated by approximately 100 meters.
- You failed to mention what property is intended to be interpolated. Also the size of the samples would be interesting.
- The differences in depth may be less important, if the samples represent the same physical layer.
- The biggest problem, that three points are not appropriate for any rational interpolation.
Sofar I understand by your description of the problem you are dealing with non-uniformly scattered data. As far I know the best algorithm to do the job is used in ANUDEM (australian national univesity Digital elevation modelling). I think it is part of a ArcGIS now (topo to Raster). You also can obtain ANUDEM as academic lisenced software for usd 700, expensive, but still cheaper than Argis desktop and 3d analyst lincenses.
with these only information, if your sample is independent from depth you can compute a plane equation an then compute z(sample) for any inner position.
You really shouldn't be considering interpolation with just three samples.
