I've stained my protein bands with Silver Kit (pierce). It includes a destaining reagent also, but the wash solution which conains NH4HCO3 is not provided. I couldn't find it in our lab. neither in others (even in chemistry lab!). Can I use another salt instead?

i used to do silver staining using the protocol described in the attached paper. For washing they have simply used ddH2O. Perhaps this is helpful to you.

NH4HCO3 is used as a volatile salt. NH3 and CO2 are easily eliminated, so there are no residual salts after mild heating. Other salts are not convenient. Perhaps Alexander is right using ddH2O.
Thanks. I've already performed the Silver staining and to analyze the bands in mass spec. I have to destain them. Ammonium bicarbonate, along with acetonitile is needed to wash the gel pieces after destaining. Would ddH2O with acetonitrile be sufficient?
