Given that "the map is never the territory", does our definition of delusion simply come down to convention? In the individual the convention may refer to a correspondence between the individual's perception and cognition and that prescribed by the cultural context. At the level of the social mind, what are we to use as our reference? Mainstream economics has been called delusional by Gilbert Rist who convincingly argues that it does not deliver on the claims it makes. Is this approach valid and if so, then is Cartesian epistemology similarly "delusional"?
