Accumax is a cell detachment solution which is more gentle consisting of proteolytic and collagenolytic enzymes. Collagenase is capable of digesting native collagen fibrils commonly found in connective tissues and is therefore frequently used for tissue dissociation. Proteolytic enzymes (proteases) are enzymes that break down protein which help with digestion of tissue.
So, for bacteria, Accumax, should not be toxic.
In case of bacteria, enzymes like lysozymes that are hydrolytic enzymes characterized by their ability to cleave the β-(1,4)-glycosidic bonds in peptidoglycan, a major structural component of the bacterial cell wall will lyse bacteria. The hydrolytic action of lysozymes compromises the integrity of the cell wall, causing the lysis of bacteria. It also disrupts bacterial membranes and activates autolytic enzymes in the bacterial cell wall.
