is there any major design difference in between smelting reduction (SR) Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and steelmaking EAF? since present day EAF are capable of oxygen lancing or blowing like basic oxygen furnace (BOF), is it possible to do both SR and steelmaking in same EAF?
Some present day SR practices like blast furnace (BF) causes evolution of a huge amount of CO gas, which is also true for BOF, can BF or SR run on CO/CO2/O2 generated by BOF stage, thus possibly reducing carbon emission, perhaps in expanse of electric energy to heat up the gas? (I know that C+CO2=2CO reaction is endothermic) Can BOF and SR combined into a single unit like direct and indirect reduction of Ores in SR are packed together in MIDREX process?
If you consider the option in an electric arc furnace, it is possible after modifying this furnace, reducing the voltage and increasing the current strength on the electrodes. It is recommended to increase the distance between the electrodes by 20-30%. With regard to the technology of the smelting, it is recommended not to raise the temperature in the reaction zone above 1100 C, depending on what composition you want to receive.
