I am taking cell biology at the moment and I am wondering how transcription processes proceed throughout mitosis?

Is transcription completely silenced due to compaction of chromosomes or to maintain the integrity of the chromosomes in case of error? Are some genes still undergoing expression to maintain minimal functions of the cell?

What about DNA error correcting machinery; is it still operating to correct for mutations?

Any informed opinions on the subject would be appreciated.
