I would like to share my experience. In my early research days during 2005-2009, I used to communicate my Original research papers to journals indexed in PubMed and also Print journals. I would receive a positive feed back on my manuscript but they ask me to shorten the paper for a brief communication/letter/correspondence.
What is the solution
Believe me my best research papers among 5 three are converted to letters by the journals.
Is it not a disadvantage for a researcher when some one evaluates his CV and tells him he has less original papers.

I don't really understand the problem - why do you consider short articles less important than long ones? - It is the content that counts.
Here a very recent example: Peter Higgs' works (which won him the Nobel Prize in Physics 2013) "Broken symmetries, massless particles and gauge fields" and "Broken symmetries and the masses of gauge bosons" were both letters. So, if two letters can get you the Nobel Prize, you should not really bother about the length of the articles.
The quality is more important than the quantity. Watson and Crick presented their work in DNA double strand helix as a 1-page letter in Nature in 1953 and were rewarded Nobel prize for that.
I will give you my experience. I have submitted my research publications for a fellowship. My best papers at least a few are letters/correspondences. The reply came to me that I need more original papers to be considered.
How far such measuring is justified and will it not amount to injustice, because they were actually originals converted by impact journals in to other article types
Evaluation of research papers is not 100% scientifically objective & subjective. We do not have a high court of the best wise judges who decide about if research publications go ahead or are ignored or discarded. There are imperfections & "other factors" in the process so my advice is to try others who may treat you with justice.

But it is really unfortunate that this world is very opportunistic and chooses to ignore quality/quantity with no rationale.
