Publishing in an interdisciplinary , high impact journal, in my opinion, is the most influential form of publication, in journals such as Nature, Science etc'. Publishing in an interdisciplinary journal  makes your paper not only to the scientific community in your field, but to the scientific communities of many fields. Publishing in a high impact journal adds reliability to your research results..

I believe the influence of any publication depends on who one hopes to influence and the discipline in which one conducts research. For example, if one is seeking to influence policy makers in the US, working with a think tank is probably the best way to increase influence, and few of those publications are peer-reviewed. If one is seeking to influence a specific discipline, then the high impact journals in that discipline may increase the influence of the research; however, with the increase in electronic access to articles, this may not be as important as it once was. If one is seeking to influence the general public, I do believe that books remain the best form of publication.

In some ways, the most influential research is proprietary applied research that manifests itself in products, medications, etc.  

The research that went into creating the iPhone, for example, is arguable much more influential on society than any one journal publication.

In academic sector e journals has a high impact and in social life social media publication earns alot of attention.

The purpose of research is to share information & this can be publications in journals , conference paper , chapter in a book or a monogram . The work should be placed in a research website like RG to reach peer groups . A good research work will always be acknowledged . It is the duty of researcher to make his work widely available . I am attaching an article on different methods of publication depending by various branches of science .
