indeed, I guess that you should search among worms and star fishes. Certain species of these animals can rebuild their lost parts, including the neuronal network of those parts. In higher animals, the neurons enter a quenched state, called G0. This state is induced by inhibition or activation of cell cycle promoting/inhibiting proteins, such as certain CDKs.
