I have conducted mostly qualitative studies since I highly value the immediate contact with study participants. In addition, my research objectives have been mostly of an explorative nature trying to understand certain phenomena from the scratch.
However, in my eyes quantitative studies are very useful and even necessary if you want to go further and validate your initial findings and propositions. So I think one cannot go without the other.
Especially in today's MIS research on highly disruptive and innovative technologies, I think combining these methods is key.
Dear Tareq Alhousary , in the field of MIS research I think that a mixed strategy (both quantitative and qualitative) is warrented due to the complexity of the phenonema we study. Personaly I enjoyed this paper : Potential Research Space in MIS: A Framework for Envisioning and Evaluating Research Replication, Extension, and Generation, December 2002, Information Systems Research 13(4):416-427, DOI: 10.1287/isre.13.4.416.71. The notion of reserach space is quite helpful to determine what type of methods to choose. Kr Rob
The MIS research needs to be qualitative, effective, brief and to be made available at right time, right place and to the right person to need tangible and non tangible decisions to minimise/avoid losses etc.
