Considerations: What are the objectives for introducing such a system --- and how likely are they to be reached?
What is the prevalence of mobile in the target market? Is coverage available /good where we want it?
What is the probable age profile of customers? (Older less likely to use, younger would revel in speed and convenience.) What is the honesty culture in the country? (Security and theft issues.) Will the “right” software be used so that the system delivers usable data? What will attract customers to use the system? What’s in it for the customer?
What is the cost and efficiency of the system vs cost and efficiency of cashiers?
What would current customers feel about the system? Would the features attract new customers?
What support systems need to be put in place to ensure smooth running?
Potential benefits: if register properly can establish the demographic profile and shopping habits of the customers. Can use this to see what combination of products and brands are bought… so can offer personalized and relevant discounts. Also, able to track time spent in store and time of day for shopping (plan in-store resources). Can track growth of customer base and loss of customers …. contact to find out why.
Maybe able to offer customers a quicker check-out so time saving valuable.
Adoption: Need to plan the launch and customer training so that people are aware of the system and know how to use it.
Usage: Age and availability of mobile mentioned above. How reliable is the system – what are the back-up plans if electricity goes down? Is there an automatic link to a payment system so that convenience is built in to the system?
In summary do a cost benefit analysis. Also a bit of research regarding the reaction from the target market – make sure that you find out whether they would use the system and what features would be attractive. Even though it is a mobile system do ask your customers their preferred method of communication as data costs could be a consideration.
