It looks like a syringe needle with a flat diagonal opening, or a blunt tube with slits cut on the sides, and it's used to suck out the ACSF and keep the fluid level stable in the recording chamber. How is it called and where would I look to buy one?
For comparison when using a normal needle or a blunt tube, it will remove a lot of ACSF, then it accumulates for a while, then it removes a lot again, and the level keeps pulsing.
They are called perfusion/suction tubes. Find the brand of your recording chamber and look into their website. Normally they should sell the appropriate replacements.
If you are having problems with the pulsation, I heard that coating the suction tube with some protein (like albumin) can help by increasing capillarity. I never tried but some colleagues do that by immersing the suction tube in an albumin solution and them passing through fire for some seconds.
