Mitochondria are particularly sensitive to oxidative stress, with mitochondrial functions often disrupted by increased stress. In principle, mutagens can affect mtDNA in the same way that affects nuclear DNA, but to date there has been insufficient attention paid to the impact upon mitochondrial genetics and epigenetics in studying human disease with exposure to environmental agents.
