At present, bullet-proof vests contain many layers of tightly-woven fabric such as Kevlar (or hard, strong materials such as ceramic or titanium) which can stop the metal pistol or revolver bullets or metal shell fragments from going into a person's body.
You can try with jute and flax, recently many work is going with these material for bullet-proof vest
Aramide and UHMWPE are typical materials, but we have also made some experiments with wool which is felted afterwards, leading to shrinkage and thus denser materials.

i like to add few thing. If we are going for some cost effective natural way, i sometimes lead to shrinkage than syntetic one. The materials i relay on aramid fibres or carbon fibres. base material preferably kevelar, carbon fibre or as said UHMWPE(I PREFER THIS LAST)
Thanks Aswin for your brilliant info.. Agree with you that synthetic materials would be more cost effective than the natural (in term of shrinkage etc). BTW, the candidates that you're suggesting would almost similar to what Mrs Andrea had recommended earlier, and surely they will go into my considerations (for characterization and evaluation purpose).. PM, there is a research group from our country made a bullet proof vest from natural rubber alumina composite and natural silk with incredible energy absorption under ballistic impact.

Or, we can do the other way around, active "personal sonar" to detect movement of object in 50 m radius. :)
