Yes you can keep the insects away if hydroponic unit is inside insect proof net or other kind of protected structures.

Why use MS for hydroponics? Media such as Knop's (developed in 1862 I think) and Hoagland's have been developed for hydroponics. MS may be too rich. Mineral requirements in liquid culture is generally less and specially so when you grow rooted plants. There is no need to 'replace' sucrose because in hydroponics plants will get their C from atmospheric CO2.

I agree withRanjith. KNOP is quite OK in hydroponics.

If your plants do not do well in Knop's, there are other formulations like Hoagland's or Yoshida's.

I think Hoagland's should be fine. I used it, there was no attraction of insect.
