Respected colleagues, I need a help in identification of some aquatic invertebrates. I found they under the stones in little river. Here are the photos. Thank you in advance.
The photo is a bit fuzzy, so a positive id is hard. However, I would say this is a larval hellgrammite, also called a dobsonfly. Careful handling these as they have a reputation for biting if roughly handled. Where I work, the occurrence of these organisms in a benthic macroinvertebrate sample are indicative of moderately good water quality as they are sensitive to the impacts of urbanization. Good luck.
