Recently I came across a paper “Creep-rupture behavior of 3Cr–3W–V bainitic steels”.
In this paper the OM image of the microstructure was said to be tempered bainite structure.I believe most of the grey area with little dark spots is tempered bainite.
I am kind of curious about the microstructure shown in the file, circled by red line. It appears as dark and white contrast with really curvy boundaries. Is this also bainite?

According to the authors in [1] ,the steels were tempered 1h at 700oC, which produced a 100% tempered bainite microstructure. Yes, i agree with you in that the microstructure shown in your discussion text was not well cleared. Meanwhile my point of view is that; the approximated etching time was chosen for a certain time and It was probably long enough that even the slowest grains will reach their first minima but not long enough that any grain would be over-etched. so what you curious about are over-etched bainite grains.
