Flood in Kerala is a good example for how nature behave to Human activities.

As mentioned above detailed studies are required for better mitigation work and for town planning.

Role of Geologists is essential in these type of areas.

Furthermore, development of fracture zones in most of the hilly area need to be studied in detail( like Micro seismic studies).

I agree with Dr. Drishya. In as much as I regret the unfortunate incident in Kerala, we must always remember that nature always outbursts it's anger on humans who use their anthropogenic activities in illegally stepping on her territories. We must be responsible citizens and shun all activities that produce fertile grounds for such disasters.

Governments, city planners, civil engineers, geographers and all developers of our societies must sit up and be up to task ensuring that no illegal activities such as those that disturb water paths are allowed. Stricter sanctions through the legal systems must be imposed on culprits and their activities/developmental projects dissoluted completely.

We need not anger nature and bear the sad consequences of her actions.

Really how irresponsible we are, Gadgil committee already marked it in the danger zone by putting 2000 pages report, but no one believed on him. Similar event was als recorded during Kedarnath Flood, GSI already demarcated that area under landslide prone but no one acted during that period. See the below..

The Gadgil Committee had in 2011 suggested that 140,000 kilometres of the Western Ghats be classified in three zones as per the requirement of environmental protection in the areas. But the Kerala government rejected the recommendations.

Working in project Mapping of Placer Sand bodies, Land use Land cover pattern and Delineation of Paleo-shorelines using Remote Sensing and GIS in the Coastal District of Kerala ....it may useful for mapping flood affected areas with accuracy...

I agree with Drishya Girishbai points but i have one serious question on what about the existing developed models in India for flood forecasting? what is the significance of that developed models. A lot of money, time and hard work is already spent on developed model, what is the outcome of such models???

Whether existing forecasting models are enough?? If it was effective, we could able to avoid major issues happen recently in Kerala, UP and Assam.

I think, we need better forecasting models based on geographic positions and population density. Furthermore, we have to validate the existing models with existing available data and have to remodel it.

Moreover,the latest incidents like development of Km long cracks, soil piping, tremors, landslide etc emphasizing the importance of micro studies especially for Kerala. We cant apply models applying in Himalaya to Kerala.so have to develop models applicable to Kerala terrain.
