Mamia Tetvadze I think the most important step to be taken in helping people maintain good mental health is to deepen our understanding of the operation of the brain.
Once this is understood it can be explained in a clear way to those seeking help and they will understand the steps that they need to take for recovery.
R. Poznansky You say that the only way to understand the brain is through multi scale neuroscience. Yes all well and good. The problem is that understanding the brain requires an understanding of biology, chemistry and physics and it is fundamental physics which is deficient and preventing a full understanding of how the brain operates.
Richard Lewis Thanks. I worked with several nuclear physicists in my career. Kohyu Fukunishi at Hitachi Ltd in the 2000s and others. Amazinglingly their theories on nuclear fusion using Green's functions can be applied to neurons. All said, the mathematical techniques can be transferred but you need the expertise of a biologist and in particular a theoretical biologist. Therefore, I would agree that physics is important to study the brain but that is insufficient. You need to understand not only the localized physical interactions but the nonlocal functional interactions that arise in biological systems.
