There is no chance to do research without lab in the field of microbiology and depending on all theories we cannot make any hypothesis without performing any experiment so to solve these it can be just discussed related to research papers and articles and teach them related to it is good idea.
Some aspects of epidemiological studies based on clinical data, or monitoring of environmental predictive factors, could be undertaken especially, in areas where ban on movement has been eased. If the work involves seasonal materials, the materials could be collected and preserved until laboratory analysis is possible. Concurrently, coaching on writing research reviews continues via distant learning platforms.
If the student is so curious about research, the best way to do literature review on a particular microbiological problem and try to write a review article with help of his/her guide.
Plate count agar can be sterilised using a kitchen pressure cooker. Use sterile pippetes and petri dishes and off you go. No incubator? Ambient just takes a bit longer + 24hrs maybe I know not exact but think of the scientist long ago 🤔
If they have chance to move, its better to conduct on the epidemiological survey clinical based. If not, no choice guide them to do review article since you don't know when the lab will open!
I agree with colleagues who suggest to do the literature survey because in microbiology there is no other chance to do the practical work only in the microbiology labs.
Skills learned in research will go wanting - suggest you assign technical questions/objectives and ask them to design appropriate experimental protocol.
I think it is possible for the students to write review about lab subjects or experiments and writing scientific practical reports from the lab curriculum vocabulary.
i am of the opinion that students should not be allowed into the medical research or diagnostic microbiology laboratory at these time of pandemic. However as suggested review work could be encouraged in the mean time
There are many educators out there conducting remote labs. Also, Interactive slides help in enhancing the efficacy of learning. You can visit ASM website for more
