I am doing a study in which I have 2 independent variables - one is continuous (it's a 13-item scale measuring an individual difference) and the other is categorical. My DV is continuous (a 9-point scale). I am unsure as to which statistical test would be the best? Doing a median split on the continuous IV is not what I would consider since it results in a loss of power. Any suggestions? Thanks!!
A regression with dummy codes or a standard general linear model (GLM) should do what you need (assuming you meet the critical assumptions).
Thanks for replying! I was going to do a median split on the continuous IV but I have been reading on that a lot and now I know it's got a whole set of issues.. In that case, what do you suggest? Also, since my one IV is categorical and one is continuous, ANOVA would not be appropriate..
As I said, a GLM will be able to handle both categorical and continuous variables. If you're using R, this can be done using the lm() function built in (see slide 7 here for an example of what you would do: http://www.pitt.edu/~njc23/Lecture10.pdf)
