A very interesting question as children get along so easy regardless of their abilities. I have not done any research in this area, so I am including the RG link to related studies that I believe would be useful to your question. I extend best wishes for every success with your dissertation.
You could have a look at my PhD thesis on the subject of supporting children with language problems as pre-service training to support SEN and working with families was one of the questions I asked

Are you thinking of preservice teachers who will be teaching in public school early childhood classrooms? Many of the preservice teachers at NIU are also taking early childhood special education classes as part of their curriculum. Community colleges usually also have a course addressing young children with special needs as a requirement in their early childhood education degree programs.
Yes, I am looking at the preservice teachers who will be teaching in public school EC classrooms. At SMSU, our students are required to take an introduction to special needs course but beyond that it is their choice. We offer an ECSE major at the Bachelor's level and some choose to double major. The proposed study will focus on the ones who do not double major.
Hello LeAnne, I would love to hear more about your dissertation. Inclusion is a hot spot for us in the sector at the moment. I have added two journals for your consideration .
Is your Introduction to Special Needs course focused on early childhood or is it an overall introduction to special needs? Are you going to interview preservice teachers to get their perspectives on how well-prepared they feel? Susan's articles look like they would be helpful.
Our Introduction to Special Needs course is an overall intro to special needs. I would like to focus on only the students with an early childhood major. Another directional possibility is speaking with ECSE teachers and their role in the full-incusion classroom. I will be narrowing the search by May. Thank you Susan for your articles!
We are entering a new piece of programming in Oh. for teacher preparation and that is a dual license program that includes ECE and ECSE. Students who graduate after 4-years at our university will be licensed in both areas. Our current license in ECE includes mild to moderate, but this dual license will allow a full inclusion model. This model is from prek through grade 3, so I am not sure what your focused age is when you are looking at teacher preparation. But, I would be happy to talk with you further.
