I want to detect the alcohols in my sample. So HPLC and GC (FID and TCD -Detector) which I am about to use consists of C18 column, and UV detector (For HPLC). The GC is equipped with agilent technologies HP 5 column along with carboxen 1000, 60/80 column. Can someone let me know, either of these instruments equipped with those columns can measure alcohols or not? If yes, suggest me key points, like what nm for alcohols in HPLC and how to measure in GC?
I'm assuming simple alcohols, like methanol, ethanol, and so forth. If my assumption is correct, I'd use GC since alcohols have no absorbance in UV. Beyond that, I haven't used a GC in some time so I don't know if your column is appropriate.
It may be helpful to tell us what alcohols you are analyzing since that pays a role in setting the temperature gradient for the GC.

I wanna measure simple alcohols and few others like, ethanol, methanol, proponal, Butanol,acetone and little bit of glycerol.
ya its correct to use GC for lower alcohols because of there volatile nature. U can use FID detector.
I agree with GC-FID for alcohol analysis. It can be used routinely for these analyses.
Ya i too wanna use it...But i am new to the field of chromatography analysis, My doubt is that HP 5 column can detect the lower alcohols or not..If yes, kindly share me the protocol...
You probably need a more polar column for lower alcohols. But maybe this thread could give some inspiration for the HP-5:

I suggest... GC with FID detector and use polar capillary columns.
Alcohols in water sample can be monitored by capillary GC. Since capillary columns offer efficient separations, capillary GC is especially useful in analyses of structurally similar compounds and lower alcohols, such as the fusel alcohols [methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol].
