The importance of e-mail for faster communication of text, pictures, tables, etc. is well known, particularly in the field of science & technology and publication. What are its possible advantages and disadvantages?
Agreed with Dr. Ilori. Correspondences were still used to be there (Official/Unofficial) when e-mail IDs were there, and that too with more attachments. Nevertheless, Change is the law of nature and we should accept it. E-mail IDs have no doubt made the communication faster and easier.
This is true that people lived peacefully even before e-mail became available. People also lived peacefully even before many of the modern facilities came into existence. But how cumbersome it was? Think of sending a manuscript abroad with photo-plates, tables etc., three decades earlier. It involved proper packaging and posting of all the hard copies and then wait for a week or two for it to reach the destination. The postage charges for overseas mail were also quite substantial. Now it is possible to do the same in no time and with no expenditure. The only disadvantage I see is lack of personal touch that used to be there with hand written letters written to or received from friends and relatives.
I cannot imagine a life without e-mails. Given that you said just the e-mails, we may have had quicker and precise communications through other messenger apps. But, none of them can be so elaborate and descriptive as an e-mail. Throughout the entire tenure of my PhD, I always communicated my articles and other essential documents and results through e-mail only.
