I want to determine thermal conductivity of aluminum composite using DSC. I know, one way is modulated DSC (which I don't have at present) so can we used the usual DSC to find thermal conductivity?
To my understanding, any kind of calorimeter can be only used to find the specific heat of samples. Specific heat, density and thermal diffusivity are needed to determine thermal conductivity.
The problem might have come from the word "modulated". Namely, the "modulated beam" method is one of methods used to determine thermal diffusivity. It was described theoritically by Cowan and was used years ago by a group of R. Brandt and G.Neuer from Institut von Kernenergetik in Stuttgart. I am sure the method is used still today but laser flash method seems to be more popular.
It should be possible with temperature modulated DSC (TMDSC). I never did it by myself but in my bibliography of found the paper dealing with that matter, see attached file.
The attached paper may give you some information. Besides, I remember one DSC instrument (made by TA Instrument Company) has the thermal conductivity module.
it is only possible to measure thermal conductivity with MDSC. DSC that we usually use can only offer an estimated value of thermal conductivity of your material.
