First, compare your findings with previous findings (e.g., how did you quantify your two variables compared to previous findings, sample description/size, bias, and error, etc.). The differences matter. For example, maybe you studied 10-12 year olds while previous research examined 15-18 year olds, or your conditions were different. You're not looking for an excuse, but you do want to point out differences.

Secondly, don't dismiss your findings or apologize. Many researchers--perhaps most--state findings they don't like as proof of what they wanted to find. For example, "Though there was no correlation, the factors are still significant because ..." My hypothetical is the norm in much of social sciences research.
