What is the Indicator function for set membership of integers?
I have a black-box function (whose definition is not known) producing some numbers (precision is not known).
How to test if the generated number is integer or not?
I am looking for computable definition of "integerness".
Ceil, Truncate, Floor etc.. does not really fit the bill.
Peter - Thank you - but the challenge here is "unknown precision".
These ceil, floor etc... primarily work based on the assumption of fixed range for the generator function (which is usually driven by the word-length).
I am more looking for a mechanism that can work with unknown precision numbers.
In other words, you do not know the range of the generator function f that is producing these numbers. All that you know is it produces anywhere from -Inf to +Inf.
