Dear colleagues;
I modeled 3D melting and solidification of phase change material filled heat exchanger and generated a (as in the picture below). First, I enabled melting and solidification model and energy, the result after 5400 second show liquid fraction is 0.61 and it remained constant over time. Then, I used vof model but after switching on the model I cannot choose material for fluids (cell zone conditions). Can anyone explain why?
Notices:1- The hot fluid domain in the bottom pipe and the cold fluid domain in the top pipe. 2-The heat exchanger linking cold water with hot water in counter flow arrangement.
Please, suggest what i can fix to make it right?

First : The melting and solidification model is established for PCM case studies. So that why you switch the solution model to VOF?
Second : In VOF model you can't nominate the PCM material as primary and secondary phases at the same time. So that you can't trace the phase change phenomenon.

Congratulations on completing your PhD. Some researchers used vof model in studying phase-change materials, others did not use this model, and what you mentioned in your answer is the same as the one that was asked about and we did not get an explanation for it .... Greetings

Thanks for your congratulations.
To use the VOF model , I think you need to add the PCM to the material list two times. One for each phase ,define one PCM as primary phase , and the other as secondary phase.
Then select the appropriate mechanism between them.
