I need to compare my work with the available commercial device. The reviewer asked to compare the price too. The commercial device doesn't publish the price on their website. I can ask for a quote. Is it okay to publish the quoted price in the paper? if not, what should be done?
The pricing is probably kept secret for a reason - perhaps it is due to pricing policy in different countries (abroad and EU), perhaps because the commercial device has multiple differently priced ownership (e.g. household, small company, corporation etc.). I would suggest to find out the price of more similar devices and compare yours with some price range that you find out. You can also explain that the price is not publicly visible due to regulations, but the price range that you found out is based on your personal email correspondence with unspecified company representatives that manufacture such devices (this range may vary depending on country pricing policy or specific usage of the commercial device due to licencing etc.).
I agree that the price can vary between countries. It is a good idea to do some phone research on the users of similar devices. For example for a dental surgeon device you could randomly select the first 4-6 dentist who appear in the first page of googlesearch for dentist in your area, call them explain your project and ask them to give you an indication of the cost (for example in steps of 5.000 $). People will be happier to give you an estimation but not happy to spent time to search invoices This method you can describe in your paper.
