I’ve been asked to revise a chapter in a textbook. The chapter was written by another author. In revision, is it acceptable to retain any of the original author‘s exact work, or does it need to be completely rewritten in original language? I’ve only revised my own chapters before, and no one seems to know how this is properly handled.
I think paraphrasing is needed.. even for your own writings. However, you will not be questioned for plagiarism as regards revising your own writing; but it is advisable to paraphrase your own writing as well.
First, I'd ask the publisher for guidance and follow that. That being said, I believe the major issue will be how the chapter will be titled and whether the original author and you will be listed. If its "original author, revised by.." then retaining the original text is not an issue. If you are shown as the sole author, then you should cite any original text as written by its original author.
You have my deepest empathy. I am revising a book I wrote 15 years ago with two co-authors, one of which is dead and the other has seemingly disappeared. I'm taking the conservative approach discussed above because we are dropping the original co-authors from the book's title pages.
