Sometimes, it happens that you feel like absent-minded about a certain toipc and you just do n't know how to start writing. What are your suggestions in such cases?
How to refresh your mind?
When you are absentminded or don't know how to write - you need to address the root cause e.g. are you too nervous, too tired, too much work, don't have time, some pressing issues are bothering you etc. Once you'd addressed above root cause(s) including taking a break to refresh your mind, then you can develop a research / writing plan which include reviewing the literature, conducting the needed research, plan the section headings in your write up, write the first draft with skeleton points, do numerous rounds of contents coating / writing until it is complete / mature for others to review. Remember take the needed breaks in between abovementioned so that you are not too stressed out.

Dear Arwa Alsalman,
This is a ubiquitous problem which academic writers may encounter once in a while and creates a lot of concern because the muse of writing avoids help and inspiration. To overcome the problem, certain guidelines have been suggested. By reading the following link/ file carefully, you will surely solve the problem because it worked very well for me.
Best of luck,

i think you are not interested for such topic, try to understand how it helpful to you further, once you really got its importance you can never feel such problems, i experienced and gained from it.
Hello Dr.Arwa
I think the best way to refresh your mind is to have a kind of physical activities daily in order to have space for breath and to be able to remanage certain things. This absolutely will refresh your soul and mind .

Dear Arwa Alsalman,
I guess, if you are not motivated for writing then as @Mr. Fung had already mentioned, you can adopt the plan accordingly. One add up could be to find your priorities. May be there are certain things you need to address first than starting your writeup. First finish them and find your motivation. There are many ways for motivation like spending time with your loved ones, or visiting some religious places which gives you peace or the places you like the most. Try to avoid people which bring negative energy. Its time of Ramadan, so Happy Ramadan and peace be unto you.
Kind regards
Bahadur Singh

Check out our tips below:
Drink Water — Drink a glass of water immediately after you wake up to kick up your metabolism and de-fog your brain.
Don’t “Snooze” — You’re setting yourself up to feel lazy & unmotivated throughout the day when you delay waking up and hit “snooze” multiple times in the morning. Pick a time that gives you enough sleep but also enough time to go through your morning routine without rushing, and wake up when your first alarm rings.
Open the Blinds — Sunlight has a direct effect on the activity in our brains. When we deprive our brains of light, we will stay in a groggy, sleep-like state of consciousness. Bright light helps shift our brain waves to higher frequencies and triggers the release of brain-happy neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine.
Exercise in the Morning — The act of exercising in the morning might sound horrendous if you’ve never done it, but besides obvious health reasons, it’ll actually give you more energy throughout the whole day. Try sleeping in your workout clothes to lessen the chances of making excuses in the morning.
Turn up the Music — Listen to some upbeat tunes as you get ready in the morning. Studies have shown that music is the one stimulus that lights up the entire brain on a PET scan. Music helps the brain release dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps to regulate the brain’s pleasure and reward centres, as well as emotional responses and motivation.
Take a Cold Shower — No explanation needed. It’s horrible. But it works.
Don’t treat Coffee like a “Drug” — On days you feel more energized, try to forego the coffee, or at least try cutting down the amount you drink everyday. If you absolutely need a pick-me-up, try drinking some brain-healthy green tea instead!
Eat Breakfast — Take the phrase “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” seriously. Breakfast gives your brain vital nutrients that it needs in order to optimally carry out mental processes throughout the day. Think of it as fuel for your body, without it, you’ll run out of fumes! Try including some brain-healthy foods in your breakfast diet.
Talk to Someone — Engage in some light chit-chat with a family member, friend, or co-worker in the morning. Even though you might not feel like it, taking the initiative to engage in a conversation really helps to get your mind & body out of a “zombie-like” state.
Play Fit Brains — Prep your brain for a new day’s workload by spending a few minutes playing Fit Brains brain games. Fit Brains exercises help stimulate and entertain your mind.

1. Add exercise to your routine.
Four new studies presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Vancouver confirm that exercise helps to prevent low mental function that’s caused by stress and aging. Schedule at least three workouts – cardio or weight lifting – every week for three weeks. The productivity and energy that exercise brings far outweighs the loss of a half hour from your day.
2. Plot out your day in advance.
For the next 21 days, organize each day before the day begins. Commit to waking up 30 minutes earlier than you’re used to in order to identify your top three to-do’s. Choose three daily tasks that have the greatest influence on your performance and success. The most important tasks each day are also typically the tasks we fear, dread, and avoid most – taxing our mental function with stress hormones and negative emotions.
3. Do your top three to-dos first.
Most people do this backwards – they focus first on the unimportant tasks and save the most crucial activities for last. Saving the important items for last means that you’ll need the greatest courage and energy at the end of the day when you’re most tired from spending countless hours completing lower-priority tasks. By getting the most important items out of the way first, you create mental energy and momentum for the rest of the day.
4. Finish what you start.
Unfinished projects leave us feeling self-critical and hassled. As you tackle a project, commit to focusing on it exclusively until it’s done. If it’s a large project, break it down into manageable parts that can each be completed in one sitting. Don’t multitask or tolerate interruptions. Developing the self-discipline of a finisher will help you feel more satisfied and mentally relaxed at the end of your workday.
5. Seek small, continuous improvement.
A sign that you need to mentally detox is feeling hopeless, overwhelmed, or burnt out. This comes from fixating on the end result, rather than looking for any improvement along the way. For 21 days, remind yourself to discover any improvement in the current situation, small or large. When you get into the habit of seeing improvement, you become more optimistic and less discouraged.
6. Recharge your mental battery.
In addition to exercise, the overloaded brain needs rest in order to function optimally. The brain really is like a battery – it only requires one full night’s sleep in order to recharge. It’s okay to work hard and be mentally tired – even to do this several days in a row – as long as you get one good night’s sleep every few days. Mental rest during the day is also important. Take out your calendar and schedule one day of rest for each seven-day cycle for the next three weeks. You will find yourself more productive and less mentally exhausted for the other six days.

Dear Dr Arwa Alsalman,
When one knows how to meditate, one can enter inside and experience silence - this give the mind a rest and when one comes out of that state, one feels refreshed. Going into Nature and just being, will create the same effect.
In one of my papers I describe the quality of heart-based consciousness experienced by people after learning a method of meditation called Intuitive Meditation. It was to test the existence of the third level of theory of the 6 main levels of consciousness. According to this theory the surface level is "thinking mind consciousness" but once we are able to go below the mind, we can start experiencing deeper levels of consciousness which are very different in quality to thinking mind consciousness.

Take a deep breath in through your nose, making sure that you are using your lungs and not your throat, and then breathe out slowly through your mouth. Do this a few times and you will feel relaxed and focused enough to take on the rest of the day!
Associate yourself with those who think positively, Look at yourself rationally,Believe in yourself, Avoid negative coworkers, Truly believe you are the best at your job, Be glad your life isn’t boring, Look at the big picture, Let go of the past

Dear Colleagues,
Good Day,
"How to feel refreshed even after too little sleep - and why you MUST have an afternoon nap. Never wake up tired again
We are now living in a world that never sleeps. Because of this, scientists across the world have started to examine what happens to people’s brains and bodies when they become sleep-deprived. Their results are enough to keep you up at night.
In the 1980s, a scientist from the University of Chicago conducted perhaps the best-known, and most disturbing, study into the topic.
He and his colleagues wired up a group of rats to a machine that measured their brain activity, and then placed each of the animals on a stationary disc above a bowl of water. Every time a rat’s brain activity indicated that the animal had fallen asleep, the disc would slowly rotate. This, in turn, forced the rat to wake up.
Despite having access to more than enough food, within a week these sleep-deprived rats started to lose weight and their fur developed an unhealthy yellowish tinge.
After a month, all of them had died, thus proving that sleep is essential for life. Of course, this was extreme sleep-deprivation. You might expect that losing a smaller amount of sleep — say, just an hour or so each night — would not be especially detrimental.
In fact, even a minor reduction can dramatically increase the chances of you having a serious accident in everyday life.
In 2003, Gregory Belenky and his colleagues at the Sleep And Performance Research Centre at Washington State University staged one of the world’s most comprehensive studies into sleep loss."...

Try these 5 quick tips to energize your mind and take a well-deserved break during long study sessions.
Quick tip #1. Have some food for your stomach AND your brain.
You are going to get hungry from all that mental activity, right? Not a big surprise. But be smart about it. Use your break to eat something that is healthy and gives you energy. Did you know that excellent brain food includes sardines, beets, spinach, and lentils? Try to incorporate these and other foods into your daily meals to enhance your brain power. Try this quick boost to replenish that energy you need: a handful of walnuts and dried fruit. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water!
Quick tip #2. Take a real pause from it all.
A real pause means stepping away. First, get away from your desk. if possible, get close to a window and look outside. Stand up straight. Lift your arms above your head and do a full body stretch, reaching for the sky. Then lower your arms and do a set of 10 deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Do it with your eyes closed if you like. When you’re done, make yourself a nice a cup of coffee or tea.
Quick tip #3. Have a short mental break.
In other words, give your brain a chance to rest for a bit. First, find a comfortable space such as a couch, an armchair, or even your bed if you’re at home. Then, block away environmental noise with noise-cancelling headphones. Pick some music that can help you relax; it can be anything that is instrumental (no lyrics), or classical music, or a chillout playlist, or a podcast featuring sounds of nature. The goal is to unplug from studying, rest your eyes for a bit, and give your brain a chance to focus on something pleasant for a few minutes.
Quick tip #4. Make some time to practice mindfulness.
Believe it or not, you can train your brain to be more calm and focused by meditating for 10 minutes. This practice can help you deal better with the huge volume of information that you are subjected to during those grueling study sessions. And, as you’ve probably experienced, you might as a result feel overwhelmed and stressed out from it all. The biggest benefit of meditation is that it actually helps you calm your thoughts (and an added bonus, it can help you feel better). Download the Headspace app. It’s super easy and fun, especially if you’re a beginner.
Quick tip #5. Give your body a real physical challenge.
Performing some form of physical exercise, even when it is targeted and short, improves your brain's cognitive performance, problem solving ability, and even boosts long-term memory. Pick an activity you enjoy doing, or choose something entirely new to keep your mini-workout workout more interesting. Try a morning yoga routine, a set of hindu pushups or sun salutation poses, or a set of squats, lunges, and pushups to get your circulation going and give you the energy you need to continue with your day. You’ll notice a big difference, and it will improve your mood!
How to Refresh Your Brain--in 10 Minutes
By Francesca Fenzi
When you go from one task to the next--all day long--your mind constantly races to catch up. Hit the reset button with this underrated trick.
Andy Puddicombe is a former Buddhist monk and co-founder of Headspace, an entrepreneurial venture designed to demystify meditation and make it easily accessible to all audiences. In a recent TED talk, Puddicombe promotes an idea that almost sounds too easy to be true: refresh your mind in just 10 minutes a day and you might be happier at work.
Puddicombe seeks to provide “meditation for the modern world,” eliminating stereotypes of incense and cross-legged monks. And he might just be on to something. Here are two problems that plague modern-day workers--and how Headspace’s bite-sized meditation plan can help.

From creation, the powerful personage in the universe rested on the seventh day. Thus, there should be constant and intermittent rests for us workaholic researchers. Thus, taking periodic breaks between at right intervals, usually thirty minutes every three hours to relax via listening to soothing music and sometimes dancing (personal). At other times, I drive and halt to study the miracles in nature through deep meditations to appreciate the wonders of nature (personal). Nowadays, I have set my breaks to coincide with the break time of nursery pupils in a school near my institution where I play and engage in fulfilling activities with these wonderful kids! (personal).
Seriously, taking breaks for very refreshing activities revive the mental faculties ability to regenerate sound ideas that we as researchers need to solve the many challenges in our communities. Let us learn from our creator!
