A mind map is a diagram used to visually organize information. A mind map is hierarchical and shows relationships among pieces of the whole. Whichever format chosen  the idea is that you can visualise concepts by adding, or indeed removing anything that is later deemed irrelevant for a particular project or topic. It is a working document that can be referred to from the initial planning stages to the completion. Likewise, reflective practice can be incorporated in that students can see how their thought processes work, and can identify how to either broaden their scope or make it more focused. You can set groups to work on the same topic and then swap mind maps to see if there are any points or different perceptions that they haven't considered and then discuss. This is also a good method of formative and/or peer assessment.

Interestingly, mind maps whether drawn manually or digitally, help instructors to 'swim' as it were through the deep thoughts of learners especially their relevant previous knowledge even prior to the lesson delivery. It is also a powerful tool to summarize the thoughts or main constructs/concepts expressed in a lesson in a somehow graphical terms to make its grasp quite easy for learners. 

It is dynamic and can be used individually or in groups depending on the class size. It is learner centred and heightens the level of involvement of students in the teaching and learning processes. It aids learners in discovering the various facets of knowledge on a particular topic to be taught or learnt. It is a wonderful tool that makes the teaching and learning processes interesting, captivating and engaging.

I find mind maps a very important tool when teaching students specific theories. In my field of psychology, when we learn/teach about the various schools of thought in the field, for example, we get the students to do a mind map of each theorist- including the biographical details of the theorist as well as the theoretical aspects put forth. We use different colours to highlight all of this. It is a great technique to review your notes before examinations as well. A great tool of learning for learners who find visual aids effective. I also find this technique very helpful with qualitative data especially when I want to map sequences in interviews or discussions.
