Some cities face land shortage, there are large amount of existing high rise building structures in some of the existing highly dense areas, but in those areas there is also always a lack of public green open space supply, such as parks, gardens, playgrounds etc. What are the ways to provide satisfactory amount of green open area in an existing high dense area which only has limit of land?
As for as I know , I think green building is a good choice which we can build green roof and green wall with plants on the building. Sometimes, using more little green spaces such as tree pits is also an acceptable idea.
Several strategies can be pursued to achieve this. One of the easiest way is having many linear green spaces. That is having much trees, shrubs and lawns along linear features such as roads, railways and water bodies. Another strategy will be to convert many brownfield site into green spaces. With brownfield sites I mean lands previously used for industrial, commercial, economic or social activities but not available for redevelopment. This is a new and popular strategy that many European and North American countries are now undertaken. The conversion of the brownfield sites into green spaces will enable the city to many more green spaces such as parks and gardens to augment the existing ones.
Dear Pak, there are several important planning suggestion for the future needs:
a) Provide multipurpose spaces that can be adapted for future needs.
b) Be generous in the provision of green space as strengthens mental health and physical activity levels while also providing a variety of ‘free’ ecosystem services.
c) Ensure that open green spaces offer a variety of informal services and activities such as: weekend markets, programmed sports events, food vending food and dance lessons.
d) Provide with smaller intimate spaces such as courtyards or informal open green spaces where people can gather to communicate, eat lunch or read a book.
e) Developers should be required to locate commercial activities such as shops, cafes and book stores next to open green spaces because they can add excitement, vitality and safety to such spaces.
f) Open green spaces should: be easily accessible; provide intimate corners as well as large expanses; have a broad range of amenities such as: fountains, seating, toilets …; be flexible spaces that can be used for a wide range of activities; offer access shelter from the heavy shower rain, shade from hot sun light.
Plan for new types of spaces such as community gardens, skateboard parks, green roofs and green walls
Open green spaces should be interconnected by multiple use trails such as pedestrian pathways, jogging, roller-blading and cycling (Byrne & Sipe, 2010)

Greening of existing dense urban areas is one of the challenges facing urban sustainability transformation. As of now, there are some limited options available such as green roof, green wall, rain gardens, and tree planters along the side of the streets. Such practices have been already adopted successfully by cities in the US and Europe.
Having green open space is a bigger challenge, and depends upon context. In cities where small open parking spaces are available at different locations close by, multi-storey parking ramps can be constructed and those open small parking areas can be converted into green spaces. Another option could be narrowing of street lanes, if they are too wide, and using the additional space for greening. Third option could be providing financial incentives for building owners to convert their roofs to open public gardens.
