knockdown of one gene A in undifferentiated cells cause reduction of metabolism rate and cell differentiation, while differentiated cells also show lower metabolism rate compare to undifferentiated cells.

how to prove whether the reduction of metabolism rate is a direct effect of knockdown gene A, or it is an indirect effect of the cell differentiation triggered by the loss of gene A?

Adds on: knockdown of gene A in differentiated cells (MEFs) did not change the metabolism rate.
