How can you prevent powder from escaping into the vacuum system when hot isostatic pressing samples embedded in powder. I plan on using pre-coarsened powder and placing the samples/powde crucible within another crucible. The vaccuum is produced by a rotary roughing pump (10-3 torr). We would like to avoid damage to the rotary vacuum pump from abrasive powder particles.
Hi, after my several trials. try to heat first before turning the vacuum pump on, and in the gate i used a filter paper so it can prevent the powder from escaping too and finally you have to pack the powder very well.

Thanks Hosam, I ended up using nested alumina crucibles and placed a cap made of porous alumina furnace insulation covering the innermost crucible. I also put a small amount of vacuum grease near the crucible edges to trap any powder. Seems to work well. When we drew the air out to replace it with argon, no traces of powder were visible.
