For the purpose of our project focused on stress measurement, I am looking for a method for calculation of heat production in the human body using simple available variable (e.g. RMR, BMR, body surface area, body composition, weight, height, etc). It has to be a calculation on already measured variables, not a new measurement. Any suggestions how to calculate the heat production as precisely as possible using above mentioned variables will be highly appreciated, thank you! Julie
The gold standard for measuring heat production by a human is to use a direct calorimeter. Those calorimeters are not very common. Using BMR/RMR while measuring the respiratory quotient, you can fairly accurately estimate energy consumption. However, it is not easy to estimate how much of that energy utilization ends up as heat. It sort of depends on your definition of "precise".

I am afraid I was rather unclear - I meant whether there is some sort of equation available to estimate the metabolic efficiency (we basically need the % of energy eliminated as heat for each individual) based on body composition ( area / BMR or RQ of the individual)?
