It depends on what you're investigating and how you define effect size. If a meta-analytic study was being conducted, say, on the average body mass index of adolescent females with eating disorders, the statistic of interest is the obtained BMI from each individual group/batch reported. So, no "comparison" group is involved.

I'd recommend converting ESs to generic point estimate (e.g., Hedge's G).

Hi Gayatri,

In meta-analysis you can compute and use as an effect size the raw means (or the coefficients of variation of the mean; see Nakagawa et al. 2015) of single groups without comparison. You can use the 'escalc' function of the metafor R package (Viechtbauer, 2010) to do so.

It is quite straightforward to use and you can also produce nice forest plots with this package.

I would recommend STATA to conduct the meta-analysis on one comparition arm studies. Based the datatype you refered，using it is a best choice to synthesize data results quickly. Additionally，one-arm meta-analysis indicates only a comparison with b, and multi-arm meta (network) indicates a, b, c... comparisons. I suggest using R to implement network meta-analysis.

Late response... But excel based software MetaXl ( https://www.epigear.com/index_files/metaxl.html )is an easy option.

I have a similar issue. I have a single variable measure 'Disposition Effect'. it is basically a ratio of Profit realized / loss realized. so can I use the same method to perform a meta-analysis to check how DE is significant across all the reported primary researches?

In stata Metaprop command is a good option for proportional metanalysis . But if you want to club odds ratio together, the command will be different

You can use Metaprop routine available to download for STATA if you only want to give details of the prevalence of a problem in a population-based on multiple studies. If you want to compare this prevalence between 2 different groups of patients within each study you can use Metan routine available to download for STATA. The last update of STATA 16.0 may have other implementation (but I am not sure). I hope that helps. Good luck!!
