For my master thesis I am working on a qualitative case study. Literature is currently pointing me towards the utilisation of pattern matching in order to test a theory.

However, one thing that seems to be missing from all the literature I've read so far about pattern matching is a structured way to operationalise the theory. From what I've read so far it goes: research question > existing theory > proposition(s) based on existing theory > data gathering > data analyses (looking for patterns between the proposition(s) and the actual data).

However, in qualitative case study how would a researcher systematically go from a proposition to the data gathering phase? How can I operationalise the theory and its proposition(s) in such a way that when I create interviews or surveys, the questions align with the proposition(s) without specifically guiding interviewees or respondents towards specific answers?

It would help me greatly if someone could point me in the right direction in the literature.

Thanks in advance.
