Hello everyone, I am trying to create a simple model using the HEC-HMS to obtain the value of runoff volume and peak discharge for a river basin. The problem is I do not know which method (transform, loss, routing, baseflow, type of precipitation) should I utilize. Please suggest a suitable and simple model to run in HEC-HMS to get my desired data. Currently, the data that I have are precipitation data, stream flow data, terrain data, curve number, and LULC data.
In HEC-HMS software there are a lot of options, so you can follow any method that supports your obtained data. if you want to simulate a simple method then you can use SCS-CN as the loss method, Muskingum as the routing method, and SCS unit hydrograph as the transform method. I think your mentioned data will be enough for your model.
@Md. Tareq Aziz Thank you for your suggestion. If I may ask, what type of meteorologic model should I use for the model? I want to obtain runoff volume and discharge peak from 10 years of rainfall data. And what should I do to validate and calibrate my model to make sure that the data produced from the model is good enough?
Anis Sakinah Sahabuddin you mentioned that you have only rainfall data so you can use a Specific hydrograph for it. for calibration, you can follow manual calibration where you have to do a trial-and-error method. In my experience, this is the easy method.
Md. Tareq Aziz Alright, thank you for the reply. If you don't me asking, what do you mean by a trial-and-error method? Do I need to change any of my computed values? And if so, which one should I change? Speaking of my data, I also have stream flow data. Is it possible for me to make use of the data?
All the parameter values, like Lag time, Tc, K, and X values, etc., need to be adjusted to calibrate and validate the final flood hydrograph. If, I say in a simple word, you have to adjust the simulate flow with your observed streamflow, then you will need to change those parameters. In HEC-HMS, you can use auto-calibration, but it will not show a good result easily, so if you change those values in your own calculation, then you can easily get an accurate streamflow.
