1. How was the feedstock size measured in these studies?
2. Does tire chips (in mm and cm) represent THE DIAMETER of tire chips?

Dear Teo,
From our experience, there is no standard optimized size of tire chips in pyrolysis process that would give you optimum product yields and quality. In simple words, other process parameters are more important such as process temperature, time, size and type of pyrolysis reactor, tire waste quality (impurities etc.) and type and amount of catalysts used, that would have more influence on pyrolysis products yields and quality.
We normally bring the tire waste (already crushed in powder form of coarse and fine sized) from a local recycling unit in Saudi Arabia.
Answers to your questions;
1) You can use different methods but I would say the easiest would be to use a standard mesh (depending on your crushed tire chips size).
2) Yes normally it would mean the diameter of tire chips (Note: normally you would have minimum mm size chips and the actual shape of chips would have no significant impact on the products at all).
3) No, you can use any units and again it depends on your sample size.
4) Surely there will be papers giving you mesh size details, but like I mentioned above you don't need to worry too much about fixing the tire chips size as there is no standard optimum size.
5) Again, there is no specific chip size, you can use many methods to crush your tire samples such as use a simple grinder (home appliance).

I think that regardless of the shape of the particles, once crushed biomass as a result of the use of sieves of different porosities you can set the size of particles that will be used during the conversion.
I do not agree with my colleague Mohamed Rehan concerning the point of particle size effect on the conversion yields. Indeed, during gasification process the conversion rate is enhanced when decreasing the particle sizing.

Most of the articles on biomass pyrolysis calculate particle size using geometric mean diameter. This is obtained by using the amount of sample retained on a particular mesh size.
Talking about the units, the experiment is not unit based.
Talking about the specific size for tire, this might not be possible because one of the major drawbacks in the measurement of particle size is the particle shape. So I think there cannot be a specific size at this time.
In measuring your tire size for pyrolysis, you may need to grind and sieve the sample through series of mesh and then using the geometric mean diameter
