Traditionally we use resource based criteria (Housing facilities, feeding facilites) for evaluating the welfare of animals in smallholder production system.
How can we use behaviour for assessing the animal welfare in small holder production system?
you can measure the physiologies status of those animal, like pulsus (heart rate), respiration rate, body temperature or also can measure the health status using blood profile, right know i also have a project to measure the blood profile and some reproductive variable in my identification,, hope those can answer your question Ankaj Thakur
Hi Ankaj. First I'd like to highlight the fact that physiology is not behavior. When you assess animal based indicators, you can watch health, phisiological or behavioral aspects.
You can find valuable information about behavioral criteria in WQ and AWIN for production animals. I think first of all you should have a behavioral theory to be able to identificate the indicators that you want to measure. As examples of behavioral criteria I could name agonistic interactions, vocalizations, resting behavior, stereotypes (this will depend on the species that you will assess), response of the animals to human interactions or approach, defecation, etc.
